New FERC Commissioner Looks to Markets

Following the Senate’s confirmation last week of former Iowa utility regulator John Norris to a seat on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), we were encouraged to hear him say he would “work toward ensuring open and fair energy markets in which consumers, retailers and wholesalers can have confidence.” His prepared statement further noted challenges ahead including “minimizing the impact changes will have on consumers, ensuring adequate investment in upgrading and building new infrastructure and meeting our nation’s goals for reducing CO2 emissions.”

We’ve welcomed FERC’s recognition of the success of organized markets on this blog and we look forward to working with Commissioner Norris, FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff and the rest of the Commission to meet national priorities through the benefits of competition, including stimulating investments in renewable energy, fostering innovations like demand response programs, and ensuring reliable and affordable electricity for customers.

Commissioner Norris’ wealth of experience in the electric industry, including the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, afford him unique insight into our nation’s evolving electricity markets benefit consumers, protect the environment, and strengthen our economy.
