New Survey: Majority of U.S. Consumers Support Competition

Eighty-eight percent of American consumers think retail electricity competition is a good idea, according to an independent survey released today by EcoAlign, a subsidiary of COMPETE member Distributed Energy Financial Group.

The study, “Resurgence of Retail Electricity Choice and Competition?” found roughly half of Americans (53%) are unaware that several states allow consumer choice. This fact, paired with 88 percent of public support, suggests a potential for significant growth in consumer demand.

Consumer support “holds true across all demographic segments and geographical regions of the country, and younger Americans (18-34) have even stronger support (90%) than older Americans (55+ years) (84%),” according to the study.

Survey participants also placed a high priority on electricity offerings such as “new and better products and services” and “more diverse fuel supply” - benefits that are a direct result of competitive markets.
