Peña Addresses KEMA FORUM: Competition and Innovation Inextricably Linked

Today, COMPETE National Co-Chair Federico Peña, former Secretary of both the U.S Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Transportation, addressed more than 400 energy executives, regulators, energy buyers, and investors from across the country at the 22nd Annual KEMA Executive Forum in San Antonio, TX. Secretary Peña highlighted how competition in electricity markets is fostering innovation, including demand response services, smart meters, intelligent grids and renewable energy growth. He also discussed the findings of a KEMA white paper commissioned by COMPETE – released in Feb. 2011 – that highlights the correlation between competition and innovation.

Federico Pena delivers remarks at KEMA Executive Forum. San Antonio, Texas.

During his address Secretary Pena noted how innovation is driving the country’s competitiveness worldwide, and in the electricity sector, it has delivered significant benefits for customers across the nation.

“We have moved from the one-size-fits-all regulatory mindset of the mid 20th Century to a progressive, entrepreneurial, and competitive approach that is about meeting end use customer needs.

“Innovation is best supported by competitive electricity markets in place throughout the country.  These markets have a significant role to play in changing the way in which energy is consumed through, in part, access to real-time, dynamic pricing – a hallmark of well-structured electricity markets.

“Competition is what’s best for our country, for businesses both large and small, for consumers, and for the innovation of new and emerging technologies.”
