Penn State Conference to Explore Benefits of Competition
Tomorrow, COMPETE members will join leading energy industry stakeholders and academia at the first-ever Penn State Electricity Markets Initiative (EMI) Conference in Harrisburg, Penn. The conference will explore social, economic and environmental benefits of the state’s competitive electricity markets.

- From 9:30-10:50 a.m. EDT, Ralph Masiello of KEMA will join Philip O’Connor, former chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission, and Penn State representatives to discuss innovation in competitive markets. In Feb. 2011,KEMA released a white paper, commissioned by COMPETE, exploring how competitive electricity markets promote and accelerate innovation.
- Steve Elsea, director of energy services for COMPETE member Leggett & Platt, will join a panel on demand response from 2:10-3:40p EDT.

The event comes on the heels of a major milestone for Pennsylvania’s electricity market. Last month, more than 1 million customers were actively shopping for electricity providers. This is a clear indication that Pennsylvanians are embracing competition.
Penn State, at the forefront of energy research, hosted a visit by President Obama and Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu earlier this year. John E. Shelk, President and CEO of COMPETE member Electric Power Supply Association, called the Electricity Markets Initiative a “new voice” in leading the study of competitive markets.
