Saving energy – practical tips for your household

Everyone can contribute to climate protection. If you reduce your personal CO2 balance by a few tons, a lot will be gained. Avoiding CO2 not only helps the climate but also saves your wallet. The individuals behind les mer om island her are doing their best to protect the environment.

Some practical and simple energy-saving tips

Switching off instead of standby

Give yourself and your screens a break. Simply switch off properly: the PC monitor when you have lunch and your television when you go to bed because “stand by” costs electricity and cash. Unplug chargers after use. With socket strips that can be switched off, you can turn off the juice on all connected devices with a single push of a button

Kettle instead of the stove

Whether tea or pasta – heat the water in the electric kettle. It’s faster and requires less energy than the pot on the stove.

Do something good for your fridge

It is best to cool food at 6 to 7 degrees. A temperature of minus 18 degrees is sufficient for the freezer – which is best placed in the cellar. Place the refrigerator and freezer where it is colder: not next to a radiator, stove, or dishwasher.

Defrost your freezer compartment or your freezer regularly. This reduces electricity consumption – regular defrosting can save around 15 to 45% of electricity.

Save energy when washing

Do your laundry with care and savings programs. And only when the machine is full. Today’s detergents make boiling and prewashing unnecessary. Wash at 40 instead of 60 degrees and do not use the dryer. Your laundry likes fresh air.

You should try out eco programs for the washing machine and use them in the long term. This saves water, electricity, and is gentle on your laundry. A pre-wash is only required in the rarest of cases. Therefore: wash without prewash.

Save electricity in the bathroom

One device that uses a lot of electricity in the bathroom is the hairdryer. So use it as little as possible. In summer, the hair can also be dried in the warm air and the sun.

Many bathroom cabinets have energy-intensive halogen spotlights. If you don’t need the glaring light, use the normal room lighting with energy-saving lamps. The best thing to do is to replace the halogen spotlights with LED products the next time it breaks. These live longer and work much more efficiently.
